Current Situation of Climate Change and Metaxenic Disease Transmission
Situación actual del cambio climático y transmisión de enfermedades metaxénicas en Loreto
1 What is InnovaLab?
InnovaLab is a multidisciplinary team that designs and evaluates innovative and accessible technologies aimed at improving population health. The group promotes the use of open technologies and open data to reduce barriers to implementation and reproducibility, while enhancing the impact of innovation initiatives. The meteorological station initiative described in this document constitutes one of the workstreams of the HARMONIZE project.
2 Metaxenic Diseases
This section summarizes five key metaxenic diseases reported in Loreto between 2009 and 2025:
3 Meteorological variables
This section summarizes the key meteorological indicators continuously monitored by the InnovaLab station at the Loreto Regional Hospital.
🌡️ Outdoor Temperature (temp_out)
Average air temperature recorded outside the facility. Strongly influences vector activity and pathogen survival.
💧 Relative Humidity (out_humm)
Percentage of atmospheric moisture. Affects mosquito breeding and virus transmission efficiency.
🌧️ Accumulated Rainfall (rain)
Total weekly precipitation (mm). Determines water accumulation and vector habitat formation.
💦 Rainfall Rate (rain_rate)
Mean rain intensity (mm/h). Indicates short-term precipitation variability and flood potential.
🌫️ Dew Point (dew_pt)
Temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture. Reflects near-surface humidity and condensation risk.
🌬️ Wind Speed (wind_speed)
Average horizontal air movement (km/h). Modulates vector dispersion and local cooling.
🔥 Heat Index (heat_index)
Combined measure of temperature and humidity indicating perceived heat stress.
🌡️ THW Index (thw_index)
Composite index integrating temperature, humidity, and wind effects on perceived comfort and thermal load.
☀️ Cooling Degree Days (cool_dd)
Cumulative measure of heat above a comfort threshold (°C·day). Reflects energy demand and prolonged heat exposure.
